Selectable CSS styles

This website has several alternative styles available to it, in form of different CSS files. CSS allows alteration to the layout and colour scheme of a website without touching the (X)HTML code. A very good site to demonstrate the power of CSS is CSS Zen Garden.

At the moment, the styles provided in this website will give you alternative layout and colour scheme, which is not very interesting in itself. However, the Hide menu style will be handy to view some of the images in full resolution. In this mode, click on Reset style button at the top of the screen (just under the main heading) to load the default style, which will bring the navigation menu back.

I have used JavaScript to automatically detect your display colour depth and assign the default style accordingly. The default style for 24-bit colour depth or more is called Slate, which utilises plain, bluish-grey gradients. The default for lower colour depth is called Flat, which is basically the same as Slate, but without the gradient effects. The style switching is also done via JavaScript. So, if you’ve got JavaScript disabled, the only drawback is that you won’t be able to switch the styles, and the only style available is Flat. There is no cookie involved in this website. So, as far as this website is concerned, you’re just a generic visitor (that is a good thing). The drawback is, this site will not remember the stylesheet you chose previously.
